“Joc knows what it takes to succeed in a changing global economy and the kinds of solutions, such as bold, comprehensive tax reform, we need to see from our elected leaders,” said Jay Timmons, NAM President and CEO. “With his voice and leadership, the NAM will be an even more effective advocate for our more than 14,000 members and for the industry that is the backbone of our country.”

Here are six examples of manufacturing’s importance:

  1. Manufacturers contributed $2.18 trillion to the U.S. economy in 2016.
  2. Every $1 spent in manufacturing adds another $1.81 to the economy – the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector.
  3. For every one worker in manufacturing, another four employees are hired elsewhere as a result.
  4. There are 12.3 million manufacturing workers in the United States, accounting for 9 percent of the workforce.
  5. Manufacturers have one of the highest percentages of workers who are eligible for health benefits provided by their employer.
  6. Taken alone, manufacturing in the United States would be the ninth-largest economy in the world.

“Policymakers in Washington, D.C., need to understand how their policies affect the more than 12 million men and women employed in manufacturing,” said O’Rourke. “I look forward to sharing my story and my experiences—and the stories of all manufacturers—to strengthen our economy and create more opportunities for working families.”
