P & K Industry Statistical Updates

The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) collects and publishes North American muriate of potash (MOP) statistics from a survey of domestic producers each quarter.  All North American potash producers participate in this survey.  TFI publishes a simple one-page Flash report that includes production, domestic sales and export sales for the quarter as well as inventories held by producers at both on- and off-site facilities at quarter end.  TFI typically releases statistics for the previous quarter roughly six weeks after close.  Our Market Alert provides a brief summary of this widely watched report immediately after its release.  This summary includes commentary on the new statistics, comparisons to the quarter before, prior year and seven-year Olympic average and several charts that put the current crop of statistics in perspective. 

TFI Fertilizer Record and U.S. Phosphate Material Exports

The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) contracts with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) to collect North American nitrogen and phosphate production, inventory and, in the case of phosphate, export statistics from a survey of domestic producers.  Around 95% of phosphoric acid and finished phosphate capacity is represented in the survey today, while 98% of U.S. gross ammonia and 100% of solid urea capacity is represented.  TFI publishes two reports from this survey – the Fertilizer Record and U.S. Phosphate Material Exports.  The quarterly Fertilizer Record includes production and inventories held by producers at both on- and off-site facilities at quarter end for the leading nitrogen and phosphate products.  Producer disappearance, defined as beginning inventory plus production minus ending inventory, is calculated and tracked in this report.  TFI typically releases these statistics for the previous quarter within six weeks of close. The monthly U.S. Phosphate Material Exports report contains U.S. exports of the leading phosphate products by destination and is released roughly two weeks after month end.  Our Market Alert provides a brief summary of these important industry figures immediately after their release.  This summary includes our commentary on new data, comparisons to the prior quarter, prior year and seven-year Olympic average and several charts that put the new statistics in perspective.
