Making a Difference in Florida's Education
One of Mosaic's core areas of focus is on education, whether for our own employees or for students in the areas where we operate. This is particularly true in Florida, where we have close partnerships with several county school districts and educational foundations, donating more than $150,000 annually to a variety of initiatives and programs.
In Hardee County, Mosaic helped start a foundation for the county school district that helps fund programs in the district. Among the programs are summer camps where local students can learn about marine science, biology and ecosystems. Local employees have also implemented a "battle of the books" program that is helping, in part, to improve the county's reading scores. Mosaic donates nearly $45,000 to the foundation, and employees volunteer by serving on the board.
Employees in Hillsborough County have been supporting the Hillsborough County Education Foundation for the past 25 years as volunteers, board members and financial contributors. The company provides local students who have an interest in scientific study with scholarships for college. Mosaic also provides teachers with classroom grants of $1,500 to purchase supplies and other items needed to support their teaching.
An active group of employees in Polk County works with its local education foundation to identify the needs of their schools. Having worked with the organization for many years, Mosaic provides unrestricted funds, and employees serve as board members and volunteer their time at schools.
Another educational initiative that is important to Mosaic and its employees is Duette Elementary School in Manatee County. Duette is Florida's last one-room school house and is located near Mosaic's Four Corners Mine. The school is a cornerstone of the community, with several generations of employees having attended Duette Elementary School.
Employees at Four Corners Mine have adopted Duette Elementary School as their key community project. They provide regular maintenance services for the school, including landscaping and the creation of a butterfly garden in connection with a local program called Keep Manatee County Beautiful. The company also provides financial support to the school to provide much-needed resources, including the drilling of a well near the school.
All of these efforts on the part of Mosaic contribute to improving the education of students in Florida.
