Investing in Reclamation
Mosaic leads the industry in returning mined lands to productive environments for both wildlife and people. Throughout the mining process, our reclamation team of biologists, botanists and engineers researches and develops a comprehensive plan to recreate a thriving natural environment. The goal of the team is not just to restore the site, but to find ways to improve it.
Mosaic has successfully reclaimed mining land for use as wetlands, lakes, uplands, wildlife habitats and pasture lands. Our reclaimed land has also proved suitable for housing developments, agriculture, parks, golf courses and pine tree plantations.
Reclamation after phosphate mining provides many opportunities for ecological restoration, in many cases leaving legacies for future generations. Greenway connectors can be established, along with recreational and public use areas. In addition, past environmental damage unrelated to mining, such as wetland draining and filling, can also be corrected.
Mosaic works to protect the environment's most sensitive habitats and the species they contain. Wood storks, bald eagles, scrub jays, gopher tortoises, Indigo snakes and sandhill cranes are only a few of the species that inhabit reclaimed ecosystems. Many times these protected wildlife species colonize naturally on reclaimed land. Other times, they are relocated to reclaimed habitats using federal, state and environmentally approved relocation methods.
Because we're committed to protecting the environment, we've become a leader in land reclamation. Our company has planted tens of millions of trees, and a number of Mosaic reclamation projects have been recognized as exceptional examples of land reclamation by organizations such as the National Association of State Land Reclamationists and the Bureau of Mining and Minerals Regulation.
