Protecting Resources
There are two aspects to protecting resources: the safeguards we apply during crop nutrition production and the services we provide during crop nutrition application.
Mosaic operates under very strict permits. For example, the water from our facilities must be clean enough for recreation, fish and wildlife. Air emissions from manufacturing operations must meet tough government standards that protect our employees and our neighbors.
We respect these standards and we strive to exceed them. Mosaic has pioneered water-recycling practices. We have installed energy recovery systems to produce electricity without burning fossil fuels. And we have improved processes to reduce waste generation at the source.
But minimizing the environmental impact of our production facilities is only half the story. Managing the application of crop nutrients is crucial. We understand that and so we created a Mosaic solution for our customers and ourselves. We call it the InSite Variable Rate Nutrient System, or InSite VRN.
Here's how it works. Farmers have always known that certain parts of a field are better than others. To treat a field as if it has the same quality of soil throughout is a waste of resources. InSite VRN offers a simple, inexpensive method for identifying what the ideal nutrient rate should be for each individual area of the field.
This means that farmers no longer over-apply crop nutrients to infertile areas, so nutrients are less likely to appear in ground and surface waters, where they don't belong. InSite VRN is just one example of how Mosaic promotes environmental stewardship and improved crop production at the same time.
