Mosaic’s Contributions to Sustainable Development

WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROGRESS TOWARD GLOBAL GOALS

As the world’s leading integrated producer of concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrition products, we believe Mosaic has the opportunity—and responsibility—to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs.

There's no denying that mining and fertilizer manufacturing are intensive endeavors. Resource extraction, consumption of materials, generation of emissions in operations, water use—these activities are all necessary to fulfilling our mission to help the world grow the food it needs. From mine-to-market, we are working to minimize our impacts and maximize the value we deliver to diverse stakeholders around the globe. Our journey is ongoing, and we are continuously evaluating what it means to be a good employer, supplier, neighbor and value creator.

In 2020, we worked with a third party to assess the SDGs against Mosaic’s strategy, commitments and 2025 ESG Performance Targets. We conducted reviews of our peers’ commitments, consulted industry resources, assessed our current commitments and mapped the SDGs at target level against our activities. As a result of this exercise, we are prioritizing five SDGs where our business has the most impact and potential to contribute on a societal level.

  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger
  • Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 13: Climate Action
  • Goal 14: Life Below Water
UN SDGs

Supporting Global Progress

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. There are 17 Goals which were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We conducted a mapping exercise with a third party in 2020 that revealed Mosaic’s widespread impacts on the 17 SDGs. However, we have prioritized five SDGs where we have the most potential to influence progress.

Though we have not prioritized Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, community investments are a catalyst for change and one of the tools we use to reach the scale required to achieve the SDGs. We use our financial resources, technical expertise and innovative spirit to achieve positive outcomes through strategic partnerships with leading organizations. Moving forward, we will share outcome-based progress toward SDGs in our annual sustainability disclosure and GRI Index.

Zero hunger

Goal 2: Zero Hunger

There is no SDG that is better aligned to our mission to help the world grow the food it needs. Our work – production and distribution of vital crop nutrients – plays a role in addressing the challenge of food security.

Mosaic’s performance product portfolio helps growers achieve key agricultural outcomes, including increased yields, and we are exploring products and solutions that address agricultural challenges and contribute to the resilience of agricultural systems. By 2025, we target achieving 30% performance product sales as a share of total production of phosphate and potash crop nutrient tonnes.

Clean water and sanitation

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

Clean and abundant water is essential to our operations and across the agricultural value chain. We are working toward a companywide target to reduce our freshwater use by 20% per tonne of product by 2025.

Decent work and economic growth

Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

We employ a talented workforce of more than 12,000 people around the globe. The safety and wellness of our employees is critical to our shared success.

We are advancing risk reduction to drive health, environmental and safety performance.

Climate action

Goal 13: Climate Action

Fertilizers, Mosaic’s primary products, are responsible for 40-60% of the world’s crop yields, and thus play a vital role in increasing food production and land use efficiency in agriculture and livestock production – sustainably.

We generate direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the mining, production, distribution and application of Mosaic’s phosphate and potash crop nutrient products. We have set a target to reduce our own GHG emissions footprint, seeking a 20% reduction in scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2025.

Life below water

Goal 14: Life Below Water

Crop nutrient products have the potential to run off farmland and into waterways, which can contribute to impaired water quality and can nourish algal blooms. Mosaic supports and promotes the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework to achieve the agricultural benefits of fertilizer and reduce nutrient loss to the environment. By 2025, we are targeting to empower farmers in key growing areas in North America to reduce the impact on crop nutrients on the environment by facilitating the implementation of 4R Nutrient Stewardship on 25 million acres.
